It was down a street that was fairly well in the Playa Negra area - lit but they knew the exact spot to wait for us. Took my phone, cards and cash and I only had them as we'd just driven back from the ATM.

Pretty scary at the time and parts of your story ring so similar to ours - the caring police, 'concerned' locals, nonchalant business owners etc. My wife was very shaken by the whole thing and we left Cahuita early. Christmas in a Caribbean paradise instantly became purgatory.

Fortunately we weren't hurt. We'd been told Cahuita was safe and we could walk around a night without any problem. We're experienced travellers too and know to be careful.

Shame - Costa Rica is amazing. We visited the Pacific coats and Arenal and enjoyed every minute of it. Cahuita, Limon and the Caribbean side should be avoided though - there seems to be much more of this type of violent mugging happening there than the locals are letting on.

Glad you were unharmed. Maybe my wife and I should try nicaragua next time.

-pc.paul carruthershttp://www.twitter.com/paulcarruthersnoreply@blogger.com
